Road bikes
Road bicycles are designed for riding on tarmac. They are lightweight, with narrow wheels and smooth tyres. They are aerodynamic with drop handlebars to reduce wind resistance and are designed for comfort over long distances. They range from models suitable for commuters all the way up to high specification machines for road racing.
Mountain bikes
Mountain bikes are designed for off-road riding. There are two main types - full suspension, with suspension at front and rear, and hardtail, with suspension just at the front. Full suspension bikes are suitable for tougher and more uneven trails, such as rocky or steeper surfaces, as they have better shock absorption, but can be heavier to pedal. Hardtails are better on smoother tracks, such as woodland trails, as they are easier to power.
Hybrid bikes
Hybrids are all-rounders suitable for mixed use, for example a rider commuting on the roads during the week but enjoying some leisure riding off-road at weekends. They combine the best of both worlds, with an upright riding position for comfort but with a sturdy frame to handle uneven off-road surfaces. Suitable tyres can be fitted for whatever the main use, with wider tyres with more grip off-road, or smoother tyres for extra speed on tarmac. There are many types and styles on the market.
BMX bikes
BMX bikes are specialist machines for the rider to race or to perform tricks and stunts, either in a urban setting or in skate parks. They have to be tough and versatile to withstand jumps and landings, and mostly have 20-inch wheels. Freestyle BMX bikes used for stunts have pegs on the rear wheels and handlebars that can spin round the full 360-degrees.
Folding bikes
Folding bikes are a popular option for commuters and leisure use, with smaller wheels than standard machines. They are light and portable for easy storage in the boot of a car or to be carried on a bus or train, then are unfolded at the other end of the journey so the user can ride away to their destination.
Electric bikes
Electric bikes offer powered assistance for the pedals, making the process of riding easier and fun, particularly uphill! In the UK, the Electrically Assisted Pedal Regulations mean you have to be aged over 14 to ride an electric bike and the battery-powered motor must not power the bike over 15mph, although you can pedal above that speed. They are an environmentally friendly way to travel, and do not need tax, MoT, licence or insurance as long as they comply with the rules. This makes them a cheap option for commuters.
Children's bikes
Children love cycling. It helps them build confidence, keep fit, and gives older ones the freedom of their own transport. Cycling is a great family activity in the summer evenings, weekends and on holidays. Safety is vital, so you want to be sure your off-spring are on the right machine, from as starter bike for the little ones to older children riding to school, joining the BMX crowd, or cycling for fun with their friends. We can help you make the right choice from the bewildering types and models, and advise on the best safety equipment, from helmets to lights and reflective clothing. And if your child wants to join the scooter craze, we've got the models they're all after.
