Road safety

Road safety is very important and we'd like to draw your attention to the key points of cycling on the roads, as outlined by the Department for Transport. There are detailed guides on the Cycle Devon website, including cycling with children.

Make sure you have the right equipment

Your clothing should be comfortable and allow you move freely, help you to be seen and protect you.

  • It should be light-coloured or flourescent during the day and reflective at night, so other road users can see you more easily.
  • Helmets can protect you from injury and should be snug-fitting and meet British safety standards.
  • You should fit a bell to signal to other road users and you must having lights and reflectors if riding in poor light or at night.
  • Your bike should be properly maintained and you should carry a pump and basic repair kit.

Riding on roads

Cyclists need to make sure motorists are aware of what they intend to do.

  • You need to be alert, so don't listen to music or use headphones.
  • You should ride positively and decisively
  • Look and signal before stopping, starting or turning
  • Ride well clear of the kerb - 1m (3ft) away or in the centre of your lane, and a car door width away from parked cars
  • Make eye contact with drivers to acknowledge you have seen them, and  acknowlede courtesy from drivers

Riding on shared paths

If you're on a path with pedestrians you need to show courtesy and consideration.

  • You should slow down and be prepared to stop
  • Use your bell to warn walkers that you are there
  • Use the cycle side of the path if marked.

Highway Code

You should be aware of the Highway Code section for cyclists and the rules for all road users before cycling on the road. Cycle training for adults is available in Devon via Devon County Council. Find out more here.

Cycling with children

It is important for children to ride a well-maintained bicycle of the right size, to wear a correctly-fitting helmet and appropriate clothing, and to follow the rules of the road. As a parent, you should set a good example. Cycle training is important, and it is offered through schools by Devon County Council via the Bikeability scheme.
